DANTES Standardized Subject Tests (DSST)

Originally designed to test military learners, DANTES (Defense Activity for Non-traditional Educational Support) tests are now available to the public. Individual education plans are key factors in helping military to achieve educational goals. At a minimum, these plans list recommended courses, College Level Examination Program (CLEP) and DANTES Standardized subject tests (DSST) examinations, as well as ACE recommended college credits for training and experiences which are applicable to courses of study leading to a degree or other education goal. DSST thirty-seven subject-specific exams cover business, social science, humanities, math and the physical sciences. Cost: $80 per exam.

The DANTES program is available online and at base education offices, and eligibility is determined by each individual service, including the Coast Guard. The ACE military evaluations program is funded by the Department of Defense (DoD) and coordinated through DANTES.

Department of Defense provide access to a wide range of examination programs to assist service members in meeting their educational goals. Defense Activity for Non- Traditional Education Support (DANTES) test centers will be established, where appropriate, to provide additional opportunities for Sailors to take tests.

Education centers provide individual counseling to military about their educational goals as well as program availability and degree requirements. Civil-service counselors familiarize Sailors with college and other education programs available in the geographic area. Education centers process applications for Tuition Assistance and administer college admission and General Educational Development (GED) tests.

Education center counselors help Sailors explore non-traditional education options, such as obtaining college credit for military training. They also help military pursue independent study through the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES) programs.

DANTES for for Military and Their Dependents

Recently, DANTES started including information for military spouses with the Military Spouse Career Advancement Account Demonstration Project (CAA).

The CAA is specifically interested in helping military spouses identify portable careers and degrees that can "travel" as military families move all over the world. To this end, DANTES has information about degree programs and universities that can be completed within the unique parameters of the military lifestyle. For example, work can be completed when it is most convenient for you - like your child's nap time. In addition, scholarship and funding opportunities are offered to military spouses.

The Department of Defense wants military families to get the higher education they are entitled to through their service, and DANTES is an excellent resource to help you get on the right path toward your degree.
