Sources of college credit that can be used towards an Excelsior College degree program include Excelsior College distance learning courses, courses from other regionally-accredited institutions, college-level subject-matter examinations (including CLEP exams, and DSST/DANTES exams), non-collegiate training (including corporate, governmental, and military training) that has been evaluated for college-level credit by the American Council on Education (ACE), and assessments of prior learning portfolios. Students enrolled as of September 1, 2010, can also earn credit if they take a GRE subject exam. Students who enroll after that date will not be eligible. Unlike most colleges, Excelsior College sets no limitations on the amount of allowable transfer credit.

DANTES offers a number of credit-by-exam programs designed to help soldiers advance their educations while they serve. The Excelsior College Exams (ECE) Program—formerly the ACT Proficiency Exam Program—is fully supported by DANTES. Excelsior College also offers Excelsior College Examinations (ECE) which are comparable to CLEP and DSST exams and are accepted as a source of credits by many (but not all) colleges in the United States. These tests allow you to earn college credit or certification through testing rather than traditional classes. Like the CLEP and DSST exams, ECE tests will help you earn your degree faster, and often at no costs to you.

Excelsior College has received the CCME (Council on College and Military Educator's) Institutional Award for outstanding service and support to the US Army Sergeants Major Academy, name a Military Friendly Institution from GI Jobs and Military Advanced Education, topped the US News and World Report's America's Best Colleges 2008" for the number of transfer students enrolled, and Excelsior College is recognized as the nation's largest nursing school.
